Aaaaah Vivid! Simply the best thing about Winter (let’s face it, we’re getting there) isn’t it? Loooove this time of year as the nights get cold and crisp, we are lured into the city as Sydney becomes all bright and sparkly; illuminated with awesome creative ideas, art and energy for virtually an entire month.
Friday 27th May marks the official launch of Vivid Sydney, and we sure are in for some cultural treats over the next few weeks. From world class musicians, talks and seminars by inspirational figures from every industry imagined, visualising your future career path to an actual light up dance floor atop of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, or a silent disco on The Star Rooftop Terrace; this year is bigger and better than ever before featuring over 180 events taking place as far and wide as Chatswood to Taronga Zoo.
Vivid Light will see the city illuminated into a dazzling playground of fun and free sights for all ages. New precincts at The Galeries and the harbourside of the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney will join returning favourites at Circular Quay, Darling Harbour and the Australian Maritime Museum, Martin Place, Central Park and Chatswood.
To really get the most of Vivid,and take in this year’s attractions you can book yourself on to one of a series of walking tours to ensure you don’t miss any of the key features of this year’s display. Of course you, can also do this in your own time and the official website provides an excellent guide and downloadable app to use so that you don’t miss a thing.

For those looking for a more glamorous option Starship Sydney will be launching an exclusive VIP Cruise around the harbour on the opening night 27th, with food, a Dj and entry in to Bungalow 8. Now that’s sure to be a memorable night.
If you fancy something more intimate then Enigma Charters are hosting a series of two-hour cruises every Friday and Saturday Night throughout the festival. With a maximum of 30 people on board, tickets are limited and include wine, a wine and canapé menu, to enjoy the lights in style.

If you really want to show off then why not capture Vivid Sydney from a truly unique perspective; book yourself on to a helicopter! You’ll be provided with a pro level Canon camera and lens that has been pre-set with a lens that will make sure all you need to to is snap away and capture your own special shot. The doors have even been removed from the helicopter to ensure nothing gets in the way of the perfect shot! Eek.
Light up ideas
Tickets to Vivid Sydney’s Vivid Music and Vivid Ideas events are also selling fast. Limited tickets remain for Vivid Ideas’ Game Changer talk series featuring filmmaker Spike Jonze, House of Cards creator Beau Willimon, Orange is the New Blackcreator Jenji Kohan, and fashion creative director, Margaret Zhang. While demand is high for Vivid Music events such as New Order and Anohni at the Sydney Opera House, Models, Machinations and Dave Mason reunion event at the Enmore theatre, and art-meets-music dance party Curve Ball at Carriageworks.

The Galeries
If it rains or it’s a little too chilly outside but you still want to enjoy Vivid head to The Galeries on George Street! Sydney CBD retail destination The Galeries joins Vivid Sydney 2016 as the first ever indoor precinct of the famous light festival. Premiering a dynamic video, music and light installation – Perspectives – The Galeries’ activation showcases some of Australia’s most talented visual artists until 18th June. The work of acclaimed creatives Murray Fredericks, Ampersand, Thi Nguyen, Mark Titmarsh, David McLeod and tranSTURM amongst others, adorns giant LED screens, fragmented and suspended from the ceiling in 18 separate pieces; immersing the centre in a galaxy of colour, light and movement.
The shopping enthusiast will also enjoy Vivid at The Galeries favourite stores Incu, Carhatt, Gorman, Muji and others trading extended hours during the festival. And if all the lights make you a little hungry or thirsty you can grab something delicious at a diverse mix of dining options including Grill’d, Yayoi, Sushi Hotaru, Ichiban Boshi and Jimmy’s Recipe. Lotus Dining will present a bespoke Vivid menu featuring rainbow dumplings, a Vivid-inspired cocktail and bespoke rainbow desserts.
